Russian Ghost Town: This is the village of Pegrema in the republic of Karelia, Russia

The village of Pegrema, located in the Republic of Karelia, Russia, is a historic settlement with a rich past. Nestled on the bank of Lake Onega, this village dates back at least 500 years and is a prime example of traditional wooden architecture.

As time passed, the younger population of Pegrema moved away in search of better opportunities, while the older generation clung to their traditional way of life.

Due to the lack of electricity, the village was ultimately abandoned in the 1900s. In the 1770s, a chapel was built on a small cape in front of the village houses, and it still stands today, a testament to the village’s history.

Although the icons were removed after the Russian Revolution of 1917, the chapel remains a symbol of the village’s past. Pegrema is now considered a valuable historical settlement and is under protection due to its age and cultural significance.

Its story serves as a reminder of the many other villages in Russia that faced similar fates as the world around them progressed.
